Description:
There are so many tales to tell regarding this modest but pleasant dry white that we don't have room to tell them all in full. First off, this little gem is made by one of the most sought-after enological consultants in Italy - Riccardo Cotarella, for Falesco is his family's project. Next, the grape blend is 50% Trebbiano, 30% Malvasia, and 20% Roscetto, the latter is nearly extinct and only grown by Falesco. Lastly, the unusual name of the appellation has its roots in a 12th century legend of a bishop sending a "wine scout" ahead of his planned travel route to find the inns with the best wine and mark them with the Latin word "Est" (it is/there is). When the prelate ate at an inn in Montefiascone he was so impressed with the wine that he wrote "Est! Est!! Est!!!" on the door. While I wouldn't use three exclamation points for Le Poggere, I am charmed by its perky melon, green apple and citrus fruits, light mineral spine and precise finish. A clean, unoaked white to keep in stock for most any occasion? Est! indeed.
Food Pairings: Scallop Piccata; Hu Tieu; Creamy Cauliflower Soup
