Description:
Far too often white Bordeaux is cast aside in favor of the admittedly awe-inspiring complexity and commanding presence of the reds of the region. But in doing this, we neglect a rich and equally deserving wine tradition that embodies almost the opposite in terms of personality. Bordeaux whites are similarly authoritative, yes, but they are also ethereal, delicate, beguiling, and, surprisingly to some, quite deserving of age. Hervé Dubourdieu of Chateau Ducasse specializes in Bordeaux's white varieties, growing them exclusively at his Chateaux in Graves and Sauternes. This little Bordeaux Blanc, an absolute steal in terms of the quality, is primarily Semillon with dollops of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc to fill out the blend. It shows just how special white Bordeaux can be: Semillon's full, waxy texture, tones of lemon curd, white florals, and yogurt, with a snappy, crackling finish. As so many consumers flock to the Loire Valley or New Zealand shelves for their crisp whites, they should stop and smell the Bordeaux for their own pleasure!
