Description:
Rioja is a far ranging wine category in terms of price point: while some of the world's most expensive bottlings come from this region, there are also plenty to be found in the $10-$20 range. Rioja can also unfortunately be a far ranging category in terms of quality down at this end of the bracket, but we at MCFW have eliminated some of the guesswork by presenting you with Conde Valdemar Crianza! This wine is made from grapes harvested in Valdemar's vineyards in Rioja Alta and Alavesa, two subzones of Rioja known for producing more graceful and expressive wines. A blend of 90% Tempranillo with a 5% dash each of Mazuelo and Garnacha, this wine spends 19 months in American oak barrels before release. A big and brooding nose of mature dark fruit, menthol, licorice, and toasted coconut seems to hint that this will be a bombastic experience, but the palate quickly disperses this notion with fresh and finely textured black fruit with secondary red fruits like cherry keeping things lively. The finish is assertive with waves of dark fruit joined by powerfully gripping tannins and spices. Conde Valdemar's Crianza hits the bullseye when it comes to classically made Rioja!
