The beautiful white wines of Rioja are, unfortunately, overshadowed two-fold: both by vast popularity of red Rioja, and then the other great whites of Spain (Albarino, Priorat Blanco, Txakolina, etc). But these great blends anchored by the noble Viura varietal can be some of Spain’s best offerings on the chillable side of the gamut! Conde Valdemar’s version is quite unique indeed, blending Viura with Tempranillo Blanco (yes, the white version of the great red variety) and Malvasia. The result is a notably exotic combination of melon, pear, and golden delicious with savory components of almond and chamomile: a food pairing wine to be sure. Where some Rioja producers put their whites in American or French oak for a warmer take on Viura, Valdemar opts for stainless steel for a crisp, direct quality. Thus, on steamy days like the ones we’ve been having, I reach for Valdemar.
