Additional Info:

The Murgo cellars were founded in 1860 when Senator Luigi Gravina gave the Scammacca family about 30 hectares of vineyard on Etna where, today, the San Michele estate stands. More than a hundred years later but on the same land, Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo begins the process of converting the land into the modern farm that is now the heart of our business. His vision is to exploit the potential of the Etna area which enjoys a microclimate and a soil of volcanic origin ideal for growing grapes. These are fundamental elements to transfer their unique expression to our wines, thanks also to a viticulture attentive to respect for the plant. In 1981 we bottle and hand label the first Murgo bottle, the 1980 vintage red Etna. In 1990, after three years of aging on the lees, the first Murgo Brut sparkling wine is ready which today represents the strength of our label, produced from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes, we were pioneers of the particular sparkling process of this vine. Currently the vineyards have an extension of 60 hectares, distributed in the three different estates of San Michele (CT), Gelso Bianco (CT) and La Francescana (RM) and are mostly dedicated to the production of VSQ, Etna Doc and IGT wines. From some grape varieties of French origin, we also get interesting creative wines. The total production of our cellar amounts to 350,000 bottles. Another 60 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of olive and citrus trees, from which we obtain our Extra Virgin Olive Oils, Murgo jams and other local quality products.
